Low-emissivity (Low-E) glass carries a microscopically thin metallic or metal-oxide coating that reflects infrared heat while allowing visible light to pass through, reducing heat transfer without significantly darkening the glass. Manufacturing Process

  • Magnetron sputtering (offline/soft-coat) — Multiple ultra-thin metallic and dielectric layers, including one or more silver layers, are vacuum-deposited onto the glass surface.
  • Pyrolytic coating (online/hard-coat) — Metal oxide coating is applied during the float process while the glass is still hot, producing a more durable, temperable coating.
  • Silver layer configuration — Single-, double-, or triple-silver layers are selected to balance visible light transmittance against solar heat gain rejection.
  • Temperability — Soft-coat Low-E requires tempering-compatible formulations; hard-coat Low-E is inherently more durable and scratch-resistant for handling.
